There are several ways you can update your image if you feel like having a change, one of which is to get yourself a pair of glasses. According to Natalie Hormilla, Associate Editor at Fashionista.com, this viral trend began with Cate Blanchett, but rapidly spread to Helena Christensen, Daisy Lowe and Chloe Sevigny. And so for generations of common folk, the optical world has been turned upside down. Having endured the name-calling and teasing, and generally been labelled as a nerd and an outcast, we all eventually reach out to contact lenses or laser surgery for our salvation.

And then just as we start to enjoy our spectacleless new life, all of a sudden eyeglasses are cool. Well that’s just great! And these new cool geek chic non prescription glasses aren’t even subtle, semi-invisible, rimless glasses. They are the kind of specs Buddy Holly would have been proud of. And this all begs a single question: why?

There are a few reasons. People who wear eyeglasses are often perceived to be more intelligent than those who don’t. Totally baseless factually, but this is nevertheless a very common perception – I’m sure if we all dig deep, we can think of somebody who wears glasses and who is an imbecile!

For celebrities, it is important to get noticed and a pair of big chunky glasses should do the trick, especially if everybody already knows they don’t wear glasses. So in these cases, it’s really nothing more than a publicity stunt.

This is another perception that kind of fits alongside the ‘intelligence’ one. It’s to do with how other people see you and treat you when you wear specs.

The other reasons for wearing fake glasses go back to the ‘geek chic’ thing. Using them as an accessory, because they match the shoes or the bag, or the dog in the bag – hmmm, maybe somebody will come up with fashion specs for pooches. So in this case it’s simply a matter of coordinating the outfit.

There are others who have multiple personalities – but not in a bad way! They opt for wearing fakies when they want to change their persona, or feel in a different mood. Good for them.

But whatever your reason, maybe it’s time to dust off your old glasses and pop out the lenses, because geek is now chic, and the glasses are back.

If you are a biker and ride without a helmet visor, you’ll certainly need to acquire some sort of eye protection to guard against grit and other debris, as well as the wind blowing into your eyes and causing tearing. A great solution – not to mention a cool one – is to grab a pair of shades, either corrective or non prescription fashion type.

There are shops now, especially online, that cater for the motorcyclist market specifically. Some also pitch their sunglasses to enthusiasts of other high-speed or high adrenaline sports, such as mountain biking, snowboarding, skateboarding, rock climbing or base-jumping.

They are usually available as prescription glasses or non-prescription glasses depending on whether you just want to look cool, or want to look cool and be able to see (although if you’re base-jumping, you might not necessarily want to see where your headed!)

So what are the main features you should be interested in when searching for biking glasses? First up, you’ll definitely need tough, shatterproof and scratch-resistant lenses – most good ones are made from polycarbonate. You’d be amazed at what can fly up from the road, especially when caught behind other traffic.

If you’re out in the sun, you don’t just want protection from glare, although that is important. You should also aim for biker sunglasses that offer effective UVA and UVB protection. This is important for general eye health, since a whole catalog of eye conditions can be caused by over-exposure to ultraviolet rays.

For extreme sport pursuits – as well as biking – it is a good idea to look at a selection of frame styles. Some frames have shorter arms but are non-slip, whereas others do the opposite, having extra-long arms to grip around the head and stop them slipping. The other aspect to consider is the degree of curvature of the sunglasses. With normal ones, it is common when riding for the wind to blow in from the sides and cause the eyes to tear up – not great for vision, or your image! So many biker-specific sunglasses have a greater curvature to wrap around close to your face, and minimise this. There are also shades that feature vented padding, specifically to address this problem.

Then finally, once you have found a style of lightweight glasses, either non prescription or sight-correcting, made of polycarbonate, and with padding, you are ready to think about style. The question of ‘should I get myself some non prescription glasses’ is one we are all bound to ask ourselves at some point. Prices for the prescription versions can sometimes be prohibitively expensive, and lead us to question whether we are getting ripped off.

If you are fairly young – under 40 – and have never had glasses before, but suspect you need them because of recently developing headaches or other symptoms, go see an optician, and do it through the safer channels first time out. There may be an underlying medical condition that manifests itself through blurred or double vision, headaches etc. And quite often a trained optometrist can detect health problems, and advise you to seek medical attention.

If you are older than 40 though, you may notice over time that your ability to read print up close might be more difficult. This unfortunately happens to most of us, with a condition called presbyopia. It’s part of the aging process like grey hair and wrinkles, and is essentially incurable. Although the reasons are not fully understood, it is commonly thought that presbyopia occurs due to the loss of natural elasticity of the lens; some experts think that muscular weakness of eye muscles responsible for focusing is also to blame.

All is not lost though. Many pharmacists and other shops (even some supermarkets) sell cheap non prescription glasses over-the-counter – or OTC. But remember, however old you are, that if other symptoms exist, see your doctor, or go to a professionally trained optometrist to rule out anything more serious.

The types of OTC glasses available vary widely in quality and price. The cheapest ones may not have scratch-resistant lenses, or the lens quality itself may be rather poor. You’ll be able to pick up a pair of these for perhaps just a few dollars. At the other end of the scale you should be able to get fairly high quality non prescription glasses which have all the characteristics of their prescription cousins. You just need to decide how long you intend on keeping them for – if you’re the kind of person who always loses glasses anyway, or usually find them by accidentally sitting on them and breaking them, you might decide to opt for the cheap and easily replaceable ones!

The main difference between OTC glasses – for presbyopia correction – and prescription glasses is that with the OTCs you are provided with a whole selection of specs of varying strengths. You just try them on and take a look at some of the reading material provided to see if you can read it. If not, move onto the next pair, until you find the best strength glasses for you.

Once you know what strength to go for, you can then look at a selection of styles for that particular strength. Very quick and easy! And that’s how you can get cheap non prescription glasses without needing expensive tests, or feeling ripped off.

If you consider non prescription glasses to be eyeglasses that correct impaired vision (as opposed to simple fashion specs), but are obtained without a prescription, then you’ll be happy to know that these are available. However, it’s important to consider why these items are normally sold under prescription, and therefore require you to see an optician or optometrist.

Eyes and General Health

When you go to an optician to have your eyes tested, the optician will do more than just check whether you can read letters on a poster. These  days they examine your eyes and retinas for potential problems. Optometrists are trained in medicine as part of their studies before qualifying, and there have been numerous occasions not only where the they have spotted an underlying health problem (totally unrelated to vision), but have actually been instrumental in saving the lives of people who were blissfully unaware of their grave conditions.

Some life-saving examples include people diagnosed with ulcerative colitis, a symptom of which is iritis (inflammation around the iris); brain tumors, which show up as a shadow or abnormality at the back of the eye; myasthenia gravis, an autoimmune disease which can cause double vision; diabetes, where the eyes can swell distorting vision rapidly because of the varying blood sugar levels; and extreme (but otherwise undiagnosed) hypertension, which can lead to heart attacks and stroke, but can be diagnosed by an optometrist as it can cause swelling of the optic disc.

So it is always worth going to the optician’s office to get your eyes tested – do this every two years.

What About the Non Prescription Glasses?

So am I saying that you shouldn’t go and buy non prescription glasses then? No, I’m not. What I’m encouraging you to do is get your eyes tested every two years. This is for your health and well-being. Assuming everything else is fine, they produce a prescription detailing what lenses you’ll need for each eye. At this point, you are pretty much coerced into taking a look at their range of glasses frames etc. You can feign interest for a while to be polite, and then say there aren’t any that are right for you, and ask for your prescription.

Some opticians will charge a nominal fee for the prescription, but a lot of them will give you the details for free – of course, they are hoping you’ll go on to buy your glasses from their range. You don’t have to though.

Non Prescription Glasses Online

Using the phrase non prescription glasses is a bit of a misnomer, as you have gone to get a prescription from a high street optician. The point is though, that you can get a wider selection of glasses online than in any optician store, and the ones online will be a lot cheaper. Many these days do cover themselves by insisting you provide a recent prescription – one obtained in the last two years – and this, again, is in the interests of your overall health.

But for the purposes of this article, prescription glasses are the ones offered to you by the optician who carried out the eye test (the expensive ones); as opposed to non prescription glasses which you can obtain from anywhere else once you know what lens strengths you’ll need. The exception is reading glasses for older people whose eyesight has deteriorated due to age, and I’ll cover this in the next article.

There are lots of people these days who wear non prescription glasses. And by non prescription glasses, I’m not talking about corrective eyeglasses for short or long sightedness, that people can get their hands on without paying for an eye test and prescription. What I mean is glasses that have plain glass or plastic lenses – they are worn even though the wearer hasn’t got any sight defects.

Now back in the not too distant past, let’s face it. If you wore glasses you were a speccy four-eyes, or a nerd, or a geek, an outcast and fashion pariah. But no longer, no more, my friend. Even in this age of glass and disposable contact lenses, and the dreaded, deliciously terrifying and “future consequenceless” laser eye surgery, people – lots of people – still wear spectacles.

Who knows, maybe there was a meeting of glasses manufacturers and some bright spark thought, ‘Hey, people who need glasses don’t need glasses anymore. Let’s make ‘em cool and funky, and then people who don’t need glasses will need glasses!’

Great idea, brainiac! And so fashionable non prescription glasses were born. Today, people who don’t need eyeglasses at all wear their nonprescription glasses as fashion accessories. They spend loads of cash on top designer frames to house their “unlenses”.

Okay, I’m not taking a pop at these folks. Image is everything in 21st century society, and we all need to look our best. And there are a bunch of other reasons why people would want, or need, to wear non prescription eyeglasses.

I’ve already mentioned fashion. And I’m even willing to bet a straw penny that a few celebs will have been out and about wearing non-corrective specs, just as a fashion statement. Nothing wrong with that. There’s also the theory that people who have worn glasses for a long time might yearn for them even after having laser treatment to correct their vision – so they’ll wear the same style of frames but without the corrective lenses. (Of course, they might also wear them to keep their eartops warm!)

You may also decide – on occasion – to go about in cognito, and need a very cunning disguise. What could be more effective at hiding your real identity but a pair of glasses, of the non prescription variety of course – best to avoid borrowing a friend’s real corrective glasses, as your clumsy oafish capers may thwart your attempts to melt into the background.

Right, so we’ve covered style, fashion and disguise. Are there any real reasons to wear them? Protection perhaps. Whether you work in an environment with bits flying around all the time, or in a lab, or just want protection from ultraviolet rays, you ‘ll be able to get eyeglasses to help. A separate case in point would be bikers. If your helmet doesn’t have a visor, it would be very useful to wear eye protection (usually of the cool shaded variety).

This brings us to the most obvious form of non prescription glasses – yes, sunglasses. You can get both corrective and non-corrective sunglasses, and everybody wears them at some point. Now these are – and have always been – cool! All you have to do is make sure the frames don’t vanish out of style, otherwise people will point and laugh at you mercilessly. And so here ends our brief explanation of the ‘point’ of nonprescription glasses.
